Panthera leo or lions have many similar muscular features of humans and other chordates with in regard to the basic three types of muscle: skeletal muscles, smooth muscle and cardiac muscles. For example, a lion, like many other chordates, uses the muscles in its tail for balance and stability. However, lions have adapted some muscles that are stronger than a normal chordate would have. Their muscles in general a more lean and low in body fat compared to most chordates. It has very muscular limbs to assist it in running and being quick on its legs. It also has strong neck muscles that it must use to carry prey to a place that is safe to eat. One of the most important muscles it contains is the masseter muscle that is connected to the jaw and aid in the catching, killing and dragging of prey.
